Research and laboratories require power quality and resiliency
Power management strategies that work to keep the power on when the utility grid can’t support demand
Research laboratories require energy ranging between 30 to 100 kilowatt-hours )kWh) of electricity and 75,000 to 800,000 Btu of natural gas per square foot annually. Variables like infrastructure age and size, type of research and environmental factors all contribute to the amount of energy consumption that’s required to support research efforts.
A typical life science laboratory, for example, may use more than three times the amount of electricity than an office building, according to a study by Harvard University.
Plug-load equipment is responsible for the majority of energy consumption, which includes powering freezers, incubators, computers, and other technologies necessary to support research efforts.
A robust whole-building energy management strategy is required in order to keep costs manageable and drive energy efficiency.
In order for consistent building power, cooling, and building automation performance, should be integrated for a building management strategy that supports power requirements.
Research laboratories should regularly assess the health of the building’s critical infrastructure. This includes both generators and power distribution systems and the IT backbone – anything that keeps the building on its mission at a predictable operating cost. These infrastructure pillars need to be assessed in order to determine whether changes to the building have altered the efficiencies.
In addition, understanding the unique requirements of the laboratory impacts what technology is best to improve power and energy performance. High precision temperature control and monitoring may be needed to both accommodate the research. Stark Tech can assess the energy demands of the facility and recommend the ideal technology systems to ensure power resilience and energy efficiency.

In a quick 16-week turnaround, Stark Tech was able to install dehumidifiers to maintain tight humidity control in order to achieve the cleanroom conditions needed to convert the 306,000 sq. ft. warehouse into a mass production site.
In a green architecture design, Stark Tech incorporated a vegetated lower roof and photovoltaic collector on the upper roof with integrated temperature and lighting controls to maintain parameters that save energy and cost.
The project is a 350 scfm waste water treatment plant. “The ability to capture biogas from our sewage (and transform it into RNG) is the type of innovative project that will help us reach our renewable energy goals sooner rather than later.”
