Customer Profile: Buffalo State College, a public college located in Buffalo, NY, has been educating students for over 150 years. The college, which was founded in 1871, offers 79 undergraduate courses to over 7,000 full and part-time students each year.
Project Scope: The College faced a challenge of creating a cutting-edge technology building that not only supported the needs of its Engineering Technology, Fashion and Textile Technology, and Computer Information Systems departments but also aligned with their commitment to sustainability. The goal was to design a facility that offered advanced research spaces and computer labs while incorporating green building features. To achieve this, the college integrated a vegetated lower roof area and a photovoltaic collector on the upper roof, ensuring the building met environmental standards and provided a comfortable learning environment for students.
Stark Solution: Stark Tech worked with the College to address this sustainability challenge by installing advanced temperature and lighting controls throughout the new technology building. To further enhance energy efficiency, we conducted comprehensive metering of the building’s steam, electrical, and water usage, enabling the college to closely monitor and manage building metrics, reducing both energy consumption and costs. Our solution also included the integration of backup generators with automated alarms to promptly notify operators of any major electrical issues.
Additionally, our team implemented and continues to service state-of-the-art digital video surveillance and protective systems across the entire Buffalo State College campus, ensuring a secure and monitored environment for students and staff.

- Heat recovery units
- Minimum outside air ventilation and demand control ventilation
- Refrigerant monitoring
- Hot water exchanges
- Freezer protection
- Fan interlocks
- Smoke detection
Project Result: Buffalo State’s Technology building was recognized by Buffalo Business First with a Brick-by-Brick Award within the Best Green Building category. It has also earned LEED gold certification from the United States Green Building Council.
