A not-for-profit medical facility headquartered in Massachusetts is one of only 213 Level 1 trauma centers in the United States. The facility has five buildings housing approximately 13,000 employees that care for more than 800,000 patients annually.
Customer Challenge
The hospital was experiencing recurring power supply issues, which posed significant risks to its operations. Despite having a combined heat and power (CHP) system in place, the hospital’s generators were not operating at optimal efficiency. This resulted in delays in restoring power generation during outages, leaving hospital operations vulnerable.
To ensure patient safety and prevent damage to medical equipment, the customer relied on uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, which provide instantaneous power in the event of a power failure. However, as weather-related power issues became more frequent, the risk of grid-related outages increased. The costs of maintaining the UPS system were higher than anticipated, and ensuring uninterrupted power was crucial for patient care, daily surgeries, and laboratory work.
Stark Tech Solution
Stark Tech delivered a comprehensive solution to address the customer’s power reliability and resiliency concerns by providing an energy-dense battery energy storage system (BESS). The BESS is designed to supply stored power during outages, ensuring uninterrupted operations for the facility. Our team installed a 4MWh battery energy storage system that works in parallel with the customer’s existing CHP system. In addition, to ensure seamless integration, our team provided the necessary controls enclosure and hardware to align the inverter and BESS with the customer’s power systems.
Project Result
The installed battery storage system is currently operational and undergoing testing with a third-party dispatching provider. This thorough testing phase ensures that the system not only meets but exceeds industry standards for performance and reliability.
The successful integration of this advanced system has enhanced the facility’s power reliability, providing an additional layer of security against potential outages.
