Customer Achieves Precise Humidity Control in Lithium Battery Manufacturing Facility

Customer Profile: Integer Holdings Corporation is a global leader in medical device innovation and manufacturing. The Corporation’s vision is to enhance the lives of patients worldwide by being a partner of choice for innovative medical technologies and services. Integer Holdings is dedicated to being certified and compliant with regulatory agencies across the globe.

Customer Challenge: The customer faced challenges maintaining consistent space set points at their North American Corporate Office in Clarence, NY, due to the aging infrastructure of two existing Munters dehumidification units. These systems, which had been operational for approximately 15 years, were outdated and lacked redundancies—an essential feature for ensuring reliable operation.

The absence of backup systems meant that maintenance activities required complete system shutdowns, disrupting building operations. In addition, the system’s older infrastructure lacked modern integration capabilities, making it challenging to incorporate any necessary upgrades.

Stark Solution: Stark Tech worked alongside Munters to design a new 15,000 CFM unit to provide additional capacity and redundancy to the system serving the customer’s lithium battery manufacturing facility. Low dew point humidity control in battery dry rooms is essential to ensure maximum lithium-ion battery production quality, uptime, and safe workspaces. The new unit features Munters’ Green Power Purge configuration and can provide air at -65 °F dewpoint. The unit was also provided with direct-fired natural gas heat for the reactivation process, chilled water-cooling coils for makeup air, blended pre-cooling and post-cooling, hot water heating coil, and HEPA filters. In addition, process and reactivation fans were provided with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for balancing.

Project Result: In March 2024, Munters performed an initial startup of the unit. However, to avoid disrupting the sensitive production process and to address the owner’s concerns about space conditions, the process air was rerouted to bypass the production area’s distribution ductwork during this phase. In October, Munters completed the final startup, and the unit performed as expected. The new dehumidification unit is currently operational and running efficiently.
