Jamestown City School District Modernizes and Future-Proofs Transportation Infrastructure

Customer Profile: The Jamestown City School District is made up of nine neighborhood school buildings that serve 4,500 students from across the City of Jamestown. The district serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade at five elementary schools, three middle schools, and Jamestown High School. In addition, Jamestown CSD is designated as High Needs by the NYS Education Department and a NYSERDA DAC (disadvantaged area community). These qualifications grant them access to funding opportunities to invest in infrastructure improvements to become healthier, more productive learning environments.

Project Details: Stark Tech partnered with the Jamestown City School District to modernize and future-proof their transportation infrastructure. With a grant from the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU), funded by NYSERDA incentive dollars, Stark Tech conducted an EV Bus study that laid the groundwork for transformative upgrades.

Using the study’s findings, our team helped the district secure funding through the NYS Bus Incentive Program to cover most of the costs for a bi-directional, multi-tap EV DC Fast Charging Power Conversion System (PCS) and its installation. This advanced charger supports both high- and low-voltage vehicles (270–870 Vdc) with charging rates up to 125 kW, while its vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability enables energy to be returned to the grid, earning additional incentives and further advancing sustainability goals.

V2G is a key technology to the future of micro and nano grids and provides the ability to offset peak loads by offering/ selling excess vehicle power back to the grid, reducing total energy costs. Additionally, it enables vehicle energy to power critical building circuits during power outages, improving overall site power resilience.

Project Result: In addition to the PCS, the district also used the funding to purchase two electric buses which are set to arrive soon. The system not only powers their fleet but also supports visiting vehicles and electric equipment, ensuring a flexible, efficient, and future-ready solution.
