Manufacturing Facility Improves Working Environment and Energy Efficiency

Customer Profile: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc. is the world leader in serving science, offering a comprehensive range of products and services that help customers around the globe in laboratories and clinics, on production lines, and out in the field.

Thermo Fisher’s Penfield, NY manufacturing facility services laboratory plastics essentials including products for clinical, diagnostics, sample storage, labware, packaging, liquid transfer, and automation. This facility employs 40 engineers, scientists, and support staff.

Customer Challenge: The customer sought to update the aging HVAC systems serving the main manufacturing floors at its Penfield, NY facility. Committed to ensuring an optimal working environment for its employees, Thermo Fisher decided to upgrade its legacy packaged rooftop equipment to more energy-efficient and reliable systems.

The primary challenge was selecting new equipment that was both dependable and durable. The facilities team focused on high-quality solutions to enhance the working environment for employees and improve the building’s overall performance.

Stark Tech Solution: After discussing pain points, energy efficiency and sustainability goals with the customer, Stark Tech presented a variety of solutions for Thermo Fisher to evaluate. Our team provided detailed budget pricing, benefits, and cost of ownership analyses for each option to ensure the ideal system was chosen. In addition, Stark Tech’s Integration team provided all of the temperature controls for the selected systems which integrated into their building management system and our HVAC Service team acted as field advisors for the rigging and installation of the equipment, as well as performed system startups.

Project Result: The customer selected three (3) Seasons4 Packaged Rooftop units. These units feature an all-aluminum exterior which will increase their longevity. Designed for enhanced serviceability, the units include larger electrical cabinets and full compressor rooms. In addition, as direct replacement systems, the units matched the existing ductwork and utilities which ultimately saves the customer on downtime and installation costs. LeChase Construction and Crosby Brownlie took the lead on the removal of the legacy units and installation of the new ones, completing the rigging of equipment in just two days.

Thermo Fisher’s mission is to enable their customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. In addition, the company thrives on a culture of respect; they believe that a positive working environment is built on empowerment, trust, continuous improvement, and inclusion. They kept this mission in mind when making the final equipment selection. The new systems provide increased outside air intake and temperature control, enhancing the working environment for employees.
