Customer Profile: The Enlarged City School District of Middletown is located in Orange County, about 65 miles northwest of New York City. Middletown is part of the Hudson Valley region, near the Wallkill River, with the district covering the entire City of Middletown, as well as portions of the towns of Wallkill, Wawayanda, and Goshen.
Customer Challenge: The school district sought an HVAC solution that would support a new expansion while enhancing energy efficiency in an existing building. The project required meeting a 16,000 Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) Outside Air/Exhaust Air (OA/EA) requirement for the expansion while maintaining high energy efficiency across the facility.
Additionally, the district needed to align the project timeline with the school schedule, ensuring that Phase One would be completed by September 2026.
Stark Tech Solution: Stark Tech was selected to provide a comprehensive HVAC solution that not only met these operational needs but also integrated seamlessly with the school’s existing infrastructure.
The project is being executed in phases, with the first phase—focusing on the new expansion —expected to be finished by September 2025. Phase Two will follow in 2026, with the final phase scheduled for 2027.
Stark Tech designed a high-performance HVAC system tailored to the school’s expansion and efficiency goals, providing a total of 23,915 CFM of OA/EA across the facility.
- Desert Aire Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) Units: Nine rooftop units (RTUs) were installed to meet the school’s fresh air requirements while optimizing energy efficiency.
- WaterFurnace Modular 4-Pipe Chiller: A 540-ton chiller was integrated with the building’s geothermal well loop, providing sustainable heating and cooling. The chiller was supplied to support the DOAS units and to feed a 2-pipe changeover system throughout the existing building.
- IEC Fan Coil Units: 93 fan coil units were installed as part of the 2-pipe changeover system, ensuring efficient temperature control across the facility.
Project Results: The phased implementation of Stark Tech’s HVAC solution ensures:
- Improved indoor air quality: The Desert Aire DOAS units provide precise ventilation control while maintaining optimal humidity levels.
- Enhanced energy efficiency: The integration of a geothermal well loop with the WaterFurnace chiller significantly reduces energy consumption.
- Seamless system integration: The modular chillers and fan coil units enhance system flexibility and reliability.
- Minimal disruption to school operations: The phased approach ensures that the school remains fully functional throughout the project.
- On-time project delivery: Phase One is expected to be completed by September 2025, aligning with the school’s timeline.
Key Components:
- (9) Desert Aire DOAS Rooftop Units (RTUs)
- 540-ton WaterFurnace Modular 4-Pipe Chiller
- (93) IEC Fan Coil Units on a 2-Pipe Changeover System
By implementing a phased, high-efficiency HVAC solution, Stark Tech is helping the Enlarged City School District of Middletown improve air quality, reduce energy costs, and maintain a comfortable learning environment while keeping the project on schedule.
