Friendship Central School District, located in Allegany County, NY, serves students from preschool through high school in a single school building. The district required a heating system upgrade to ensure reliable and efficient operation and student and staff comfort during the school year.
Customer Challenge
The district needed a complete boiler replacement within a short timeframe, from March to June 2024. The primary challenge was maintaining heating service to the school during the colder months while replacing outdated boiler equipment. Minimizing downtime was critical to avoid disruptions.
Stark Tech Solution
Stark Tech designed a two-phase approach to ensure continuous heating service during the project:
- Phase 1: An emergency quick-ship boiler was procured and installed to provide redundancy for the outdated system. This ensured uninterrupted heating while the rest of the replacement process was underway.
- Phase 2: The remaining two boilers were installed after the heating season, keeping the initial boiler online for continued service.
To enhance efficiency and optimize system performance, Stark Tech implemented the following upgrades:
- Installed three new Aerco boilers, selected to minimize piping rework and reduce system downtime.
- Replaced and upgraded control valves and modified the boiler flue.
- Overhauled and updated the control system with the latest Schneider Electric system for improved reliability and energy efficiency.
- Added variable frequency drives (VFDs) to the boiler and house pumps, optimizing loop pump demand and matching required boiler flows.
Project Results
- Seamless Transition: The first boiler and control system were operational by the end of March, allowing the system to remain functional throughout the heating season.
- On-Time Completion: The full system replacement was completed by the required deadline of June 30, 2024.
- Reliable Performance: The upgraded boiler system has operated without issues throughout the winter, providing enhanced efficiency and reliability.
