Systems Integration Completed in Expedited Schedule at University in Florida

Customer Profile: Florida Tech is a tier 1 ranked university located in Melbourne, FL with programs in science, engineering, aeronautics, business, humanities, psychology, and communication. The University has more than 9,300 total students enrolled and prides itself on a 92% post-graduation success rate. To keep up with the growing demand of students seeking degrees in biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, and health sciences, the University built a brand-new, 61,000 square-foot health sciences building on campus.

Customer Challenge: During the expansion project in 2021, a Smoke Control System was not included in the original scope of work for the new Gordon L. Nelson Health Sciences building. The system was not identified as left out of scope until late in the project, and it required additional detail that could potentially delay the project completion and building opening.

Stark Solution: Stark Tech recommended a fire alarm system that integrated with the existing Schneider Electric EcoStruxure platform. Our team provided a schedule, scope, and execution plan to accelerate the integration. However, due to long material lead times, the general contractor on the project did not initially approve of the estimated completion date and requested the project go out to bid against the existing fire alarm contractor. After a unanimous vote, Stark Tech was selected for the project based on our detailed schedule, proven track record, and history with the engineer.

The Stark Tech team provided special project management to oversee the addition of the EcoStruxure system, developed scopes of work, coordinated with the other subcontractors, and successfully expedited submittals and equipment orders. The team tracked the project schedule daily and reported back to all contractors twice a week to identify critical tasks and identify areas to expedite the startup and completion of the project.

Project Result: Stark Tech was able to expedite the design, engineer approval, and manufacture of an ADI Fireman’s Override Panel and other materials. The team worked closely with the Electrical Contractor on the electrical installation and door integration and was the commissioning agent through testing. The project was finished prior to the scheduled building opening.

Stark Tech continues to be the sole source control vendor for Florida Tech University. We provide various integrations throughout the campuses’ many facilities including HVAC, lighting, lab systems, and power monitoring systems. The Gordon L. Nelson Health Sciences Building has since enhanced the University’s capacity for undergraduate and graduate education, scientific research, and social engagement.
